We met at a WHS band dinner in May 2011. I&#039;ve mentored a homeless individual and am trying to assist him with finding employment. I&#039;m encountering mentor-mentee communication barriers due to the lack of public telephone communication devices since I&#039;m a cell user and the homeless usually have no access except to borrow someone&#039;s phone to maintain mentor-mentee contact. You&#039;re right it is a compilation of a number of reasons, though I&#039;m not sure how to feel about that kind of dead weight in our government. If there are four of you with nothing to do getting paid while we&#039;re dying for workers and getting gouged to offer them benefits and good salaries it makes me think there is an imbalance in the system. Although yes there are some startups and small businesses that pay crap and over no compensation we are not one of those. We offer flex time, paid vacations, remote work schedules, benefits, bonuses, incentives, continuing ed packages, and more. We don&#039;t fire someone because the economy slows down, we work something out, get creative, do more marketing. We only let people go when they don&#039;t do the work. There is no one size fits all and everyone&#039;s situation is different, but we are paying and we are hiring we just can&#039;t find people committed to doing the work. So yes there may be a few people who are really comfortable in a job who aren&#039;t interested, but everyday in the news we hear about high unemployment rates. Those are people willing and actively searching for jobs. I think that the economy has shown that corporations aren&#039;t the surefire thing they once were, and time and time again studies prove that small businesses are the job creators, yet with all this there is still a hiccup between supply and demand of labor. My husband and I have sacrificed our pay to make sure our employees are taken care of, then we just get taken advantage of instead while working twice as hard to compensate for what we can&#039;t find employee wise. Its very frustrating.</description>

The fact is that I simply cannot afford to. I get paid more to sit and be anxious than I would to go and actually work somewhere else. When I add in the benefits package that I have (I work for the govt.), I just can&#039;t justify working for a small business. 
I can&#039;t be the only one doing that math, and coming up with the same equation. 
Factor in some health problems, and the redundancy of a large organization (there are 4 people sitting not doing my job), and well, I can take a few days  of unpaid leave to be sick, and I won&#039;t lose my job. 
Can&#039;t say as I think that&#039;s the case for any small business employee. Because of the size of the organization, every employee is vital. Time off is not good. Unplanned time off can be devastating. It can cost your job. 
So, there is an answer. Possibly not THE answer, but THE answer may be made up of an amalgamation of many smaller ones.
